The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.

We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
