This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
