In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
