The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
