The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the popular series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Fan Response

One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
