Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained no new data.
