Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Negotiations Suggested
There are "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.
This past week Trump stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was not "needed".
The White House declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been delayed.
Previous Developments
The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.
Yet, on this week the American president endorsed a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the existing battle lines.
"Leave it as is where it stands," he said.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.
Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.
Negotiating Stances
The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of comprehensive conditions that involve the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.
He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently occurred before reports that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.
Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
