New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
