Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Research now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, attacks were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, medics said.
