Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
