Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or defense roles.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the officials affirmed in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The video message seemed to prompt a furious reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader issued a combined announcement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no place in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our United States with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the security of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this country and swore an vow to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by death for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising troops to defy commands, I think that is historic in US history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to analyze the language and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative said. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically supporting."
